Each year since 1998, the Red Bull Music Academy has invited a class of 60 carefully selected budding producers from around the world to attend an intensive term of workshops with the leading exponents of cutting edge beat science. And each year, attendees and lecturers from previous terms travel the world to spread the RBMA gospel and give potential applicants the low down on the Academy and the application process.
This year, LA MC Blu and his partner in production Exile visit Australia to share their wealth of knowledge, and perform a special showcase at Brisbane’s Alhambra Lounge.
Blu is at the forefront of LA’s new wave of MCs, releasing a stream of mixtapes, collaborative works and solo albums that highlight a brash delivery and vibrant personality sorely lacking in modern rap. His albums include the acclaimed Below The Heavens (2007, produced by Exile, Sound In Colour Records), Johnson & Jonson (2008, with producer Mainframe, Tres Records) and The Piece Talks (2008, with Ta’Raach as C.R.A.C Knuckles, Tres Records). Blu recently made waves with a stunning freestyle over the track GNGBNG from Flying Lotus’ Los Angeles album.
Blu’s foremost production collaborator is Exile, a maestro on the MPC sampler who is equally at home crafting boom-bap tracks for Mobb Deep, Ghostface and Jurassic 5 as he is appearing on future beat compilations alongside Flying Lotus and Computer Jay. His most recent album is Radio (2009, Plug Research), an incredible opus crafted entirely from samples taken from the radio.
Blu & Exile will be supported by dance floor wrecking Brisbane glitch-hop duo Blunt Instrument (Serato v Ableton set), along with a selection of local DJs pushing the latest hip hop and future beat sounds from around the world.
